They can't take down the great race place. That's right...Hollywood Park is "the great race place." Before Stronach and his Magna madness...Santa Anita was "the great race place." But thanks to R.D. Hubbard Hollywood Park was restored. Recapturing some of the old charm of pre Marge Everett. Who like Stronach, never made a move that was for the good of the sport. Churchhilldowns were irresponsible for selling out to a property management company. C'mon folks. We better start getting involved and developing a little momentum. Or are we going to be last minute reactionaries to a real tragedy?
I grew up within walking distance of Hollywood Park,. When I was a kid my mom would take me over for morning workouts. there was then the Railbird Club and you had to say if you were a filly or a colt. When I was young Hollywood Park ran between mid May and late July. They had an open house the weekend before the race meet started. I remember seeing what was probably Minature or at least Falabella horses that somebody who was the then owners had along with a few other animals. Some other events where held during the off season including a Girl Scout event. The fall was Western Harness racing in those days both trotters and pacers competed and the trainers drove their horses. Only when the stable had multiple entries would anyone else drive a horse. Until the late 60s all the racing was during the day. Los Alamitos was open between Santa Anita and Hollywood Park for quarter horses and Western Harness used Hollywood Park for fall racing. The owner of Native Diver who is buried in the grandstand gardens at Hollypark L K Shapiro had someting to do with Western Harness racing. Bret Hanover one of the two three time Harness horse of the year competed at the Western Harness at Hollywood park meeting,Bret raced twice and lost both races his final two starts. According to Brets trainer the final race was over a mile and due to Frank Ervin Brets trainer/driver being in ill health is one reason
Bret finished third in the Western Pacing Classic after suprise winner True Duane and rival Cardigan Bay.
After I moved to Westchester I used to take my much younger sister who was horse crazy like me to Hollywood Park. Ill never forget the time Seattle Slew who had just won the Triple Crown undefeated came to Hollywood Park to compete in the Swaps stakes, We spend most of the day in the grandstand gardens the track was packed, But Seattle Slew lost after that they had the Swaps stakes just before the end in late July. It was in early July when Seattle Slew lost.
The last time I went to Hollywood Park was when Churchill Downs Inc owned the track, It was the day the Kentucky Derby was run and since I hate the sexist NTRA Go Baby Go motto and the staff didnt care if you didnt like their lack of help. I cant drive I came by bus and got off by the Forum since I live just off Manchester ave. in Westchester. I walked down Praire (Ave of Champions) and since it was after the time you had to be at the track to bet on the races they didnt have the entrances near the Forum opened. I had such a rotten treatment by the male staff that I got a refund, went home and watched the Kentucky Derby on TV.
Zenyatta is the best horse to race in Southern California in this decade. We need more heroes like her. Please save Hollywood Park. Our horse racing industry will be degraded if we lose this precious racetrack.

It would be a real shame to lose Hollywood Park.
So many memories... it will be a sad day for the sport
if a way cannot be found to SAVE HOLLYWOOD PARK!
I have talked to a Prominent Trainer and a Prominet Jockey Agent and they say Hollywood is not dead yet. They say the END IS inevitable with these Owners if they keep it, but it will still take a while. So dont be surprised if they DO Race there in 2010 and 2011. To me Hollywood Park IS a Great Place (Like this site) but it's in a Neighborhood that can't be saved and "Pie in the Sky" Developers ALWAYS have a B.S. Answer so they can make money. If you gave Developers a Chance they would tear down the Eiffel Tower, The Taj Mahal and The White House to put in a Parking lot, Mall or Future Slum. That is what "Hollywood Park Tommorow" will become and SOONER than later. Let's get REAL, who will want to go shopping, or for a "City walk" or LIVE THERE NOW? Nobody, unless you like Bullet Hole Air conditioning, and not when they have Beverly Hills or Chino Hills to go to. Speaking of Beverly Hills do you think if Hollywood Park was located IN Beverly Hills they would want to demolish it? HA! Hollywood Park is Historic and should be kept as a Historic Landmark. Where is the Governator now?
Richard Shapiro former disgraced "head" of CHRB was pleaded "no contest" and sentenced to 3 years of probation and will pay $6,700 in restitution for misdeanor (now reduced from felony) vandalism charge for keying a horse owner's car. And anyone want to know why CA horse racing is dying and a rudderless ship. This is the same fool who with eyes closed spent millions on the synthetic track experiment--that has been mediocre at best to a failure b/c of LACK OF DUE DILIGENCE and RESEARCH. Wrong people, in wrong positions. Richard also lost his shirt in the ponzi/fonzi scheme by con-man Made Off. Like most boomers, they always want more, more, more,, greed and $$$$.
